Pearson Edexcel A Level Maths (9MA0), Paper by Paper
Harry teaches the full Pearson Edexcel A Level Mathematics (9MA0) qualification. The UK A Level is a linear qualification. Students sit three examination papers at the end of the course. All three papers are two hours long, worth 100 marks, and contribute equally to the final qualification.
Paper 1 – Pure Mathematics 1 (9MA0/01)
Paper 1 can assess content from across the Pure Mathematics specification. Pure Mathematics includes topics such as algebra and functions, proof, coordinate geometry, sequences and series, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration, numerical methods, and vectors.
Paper 2 – Pure Mathematics 2 (9MA0/02)
Paper 2 also assesses content from across the Pure Mathematics specification. There is no fixed division of Pure topics between Paper 1 and Paper 2, so students need to be prepared to apply material from across the course in either examination.
Paper 3 – Statistics and Mechanics (9MA0/03)
Paper 3 consists of both Statistics and Mechanics.
Statistics includes sampling, data presentation and interpretation, probability, statistical distributions, and hypothesis testing.
Mechanics includes quantities and units, kinematics, forces and Newton’s laws, and moments.
Students are also expected to be familiar with Pearson’s Large Data Set for the Statistics element of the course.
How the A* grade is awarded
Pearson Edexcel A Level Mathematics is a linear qualification, so the final grade is determined by the student’s overall performance across all three papers and the grade boundaries set for that examination series.
